Kursk NPP-2: Concreting of the shell of the tallest cooling tower in Russia has begun

Concreting of the exhaust tower shell has begun at the cooling tower of power unit No. 1 of Kursk NPP-2. It will be the tallest cooling tower in Russia with its height reaching 179 meters.

“The design of the evaporative cooling tower of Kursk NPP-2 provides for the construction of 115 tiers. Concreting of all levels will be carried out using automated self-propelled formwork, which will significantly speed up the process of concrete work and increase the overall strength of the structure. By the end of 2021 65 tiers of the shell are to be concreted, which will raise the cooling tower structure to a level of 105 meters,” - in that way Alexey Buldygin, head of the Construction Department, described the work plans.

About 14,000 cubic meters of concrete will be required to concrete the entire shell of the exhaust tower. Concrete pumps will be used to supply concrete mix up to the fifth tier. The concreting of the sixth and subsequent tiers will be achieved through a proven technology utilizing a crane mounted in the center of the cooling tower. The concreting of the cooling tower is carried out by the specialized construction organization OOO SMU No. 1 (a subsidiary of AO ASE).

Work on the construction of the cooling tower of the first power unit began at the end of 2019. The beginning of the concreting of the shell was preceded by the installation of 100 columns of an inclined colonnade and the concreting of the lower support ring. This ring is the base on which the shell of the exhaust tower is now being erected.

The tower is expected to be fully completed by 2024.
