The inner containment is one of the most important elements of the power unit safety system that serves to prevent release of radioactive substances into the environment. Specialists of KF OOO Trest RosSEM started construction of the dome part of the inner containment, working on installation of reinforced blocks of the fourth tier in the reactor building of the first power unit.

“The shell should be narrowed on the fourth tier for further assembly of the dome. The special feature of the tier are the armored blocks consoles that house a rail track used for the operation of a polar crane,” Aleksey Buldygin, head of the Kursk NPP-2 Capital Construction Department explained.

Operations for the transportation and installation of the main technological equipment of the containment area (reactor vessel, steam generators, pressure compensator) will subsequently be carried out with the help of the polar crane. Due to its circular path, it will be able to carry out all loading and unloading operations at any point in the reactor compartment.

10 reinforced blocks that are 6.45 meters high and have a mass of about 31 tons are to be assembled by the end of April. The erection of the tier will raise the structure of the power unit to the level of 43.1 meters.

The dome part also includes the installation of the fifth and sixth tiers. The dome is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
