Over seventy experts of the Leningrad NPP took part in the construction of the Belarusian NPP

For 7 years, the personnel of the Leningrad NPP have been taking an active part in the construction of the first two-unit nuclear power plant in the history of the Republic of Belarus. The NPP is equipped with new-gen VVER-1200 reactors. This large international project started in November 2013 and, over the years of its implementation, the experience of Russian specialists was in demand at almost all stages of construction, installation, including mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning, as well as in the preparation and conduct of the key events during the construction of the newest generation 3+ power units.

The workers of the Leningrad NPP have spent more than 4,000 days on business trips to the construction site of the Belarusian NPP in Ostrovets in the last two years alone in order to provide technical, consulting, engineering assistance to Belarusian colleagues. The main areas of activity are methodological assistance in training the personnel of the Belarusian NPP, documentation support in obtaining the license to operate power unit No. 1, assistance in creating project management at the construction site similar to that of the Leningrad NPP, consulting services during the assembly of the reactor and the turbine, technical support in preparing the unit for commissioning, including preparation for the stage of cold-hot trial, physical and power start-up. That way, a whole team of builders as well as experts from the reactor and turbine departments, chemists, metrologists, workers of the centralized repair workshop, technological management service and many other divisions of the Leningrad NPP have been successfully solving key tasks at two construction sites at once for many months.

“It was a real rush time for our entire team, but we were always ready to help our Belarusian colleagues”, Director of the Leningrad NPP Vladimir Pereguda noted. “I am sure that we achieved real benefits in the implementation of Rosatom's first foreign project with generation 3+ reactors, and that was possible due to the level of competence of Leningrad nuclear scientists, accumulated by our specialists over 45 years of operating RBMK units, as well as to the experience of successful start-up operations at the VVER-1200 power unit. Some of our specialists still remain at the NPP and help Belarusian nuclear scientists in preparing the second power unit for commissioning.

Background:

The Belarusian NPP is the first nuclear power plant in the history of the country as well as the largest project of Russian-Belarusian cooperation. The construction of the NPP is carried out in accordance with the Agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus that were concluded in March 2011 under the full responsibility of the general contractor (as a "turnkey" service). The plant is being constructed according to a standard design of generation 3+, similar to the units operated by Rosenergoatom JSC at the Leningrad and Novovoronezh NPPs.
