Another key milestone has been achieved at the Kursk NPP-2 one week ahead of schedule

The 1st power block emergency control room’s wall has been concreted at the Kursk NPP-2 construction site. The emergency control room is a part of the Kursk NPP-2 building set being constructed according to a VVER-TOI project, and it is designed to manage the reactor facility remotely.

‘In an unlikely event of the main control room being unavailable for the operating staff, we can use the emergency one’, Alexey Volnov, the chief engineer of the Kursl NPP-2, said. ‘Using separate devices, hardware and dashboards, staff can manage the safety systems, switch and keep the reactor in subcritical state, remove heat from the reactor, and control the reactor facility’s state’.

The emergency control room is a freestanding two-storey building with the measurements of 33-18 meters and 12.35 meters high. Under the normal operation, this building is a part of the free access zone.

This building is being constructed by a contractor OOO ‘SMU-1’ (building and construction department). Before the concreting, the team completed the reinforcement operations, which required 10.5 tons of metal. Once the wall concrete has fully developed its strength, the team will start working on the flooring.
