In 2020, the number of workers at the Kursk NPP-2 construction site has increased from 4.5 to 6.6 thousand people

The increase was due to the fact that the amount of work has doubled: at the moment, 44 facilities are being constructed, with their number to reach 80 by the end of this year.

‘We gave already planned all working parameters for 2020 both with regard to the actual amount of work and the financials’, Alexey Volnov, the chief engineer of the Kursk NPP-2, noted. ‘There are five key milestones for each block and one governmental assignment: to erect the flooring for the first power block’s main circulating pump and to install the cantilever truss at its designed spot at the second power block’.

In 2020, it is planned to lay around 170 thousand cubic meters of concrete and use 18 thousand tons of reinforcements. Since the winter was mild this year, the construction team intends to place over 2 million cubic meters of sand into the basin foundation, which is above what was initially plan. They will then have to place another 1 million cubic meters as scheduled for 2021.

The delivery of large-size equipment – the turbine hall’s primary valve with the capacity of 290 thousand tons – is expected. The reactor vessel is scheduled to be delivered for assembly in autumn. The assembly itself will take place in 2021.

‘This year, we will commence the assembly of the tanks and vessels into the auxiliary and the primary reactor buildings based on the Open-Top technology. This will cover high-capacity tanks, each being around 400 cubic meters. The Open-Top method simplifies the installation of heavy equipment as it will be installed directly into its designated location, which is different from the traditional one requiring complex lifting tools and processes’, Alexey Volnov continued. ‘We are planning to finalize the turbine building framework, too. Our main goal is to keep the pace we achieved last year and to speed the progress up without compromising on the quality’.

By the end of this year, the construction site will have changed both visually – the facilities will grow in size, e.g., the first power block’s cooling tower will get to the point of almost 11 meters – and technically, e.g., the primary buildings will be ‘filled in’. The Kursk NPP-2 is starting to shape up.
