Speaking of VVEE-1200 in English: the Leningrad NPP holds trainings in ‘nuclear’ technical translation at a real-life facility

Over 20 technical translators of the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (‘Atomprojekt’, ‘Atomstroyexport’ ‘Rusatom Oversea’, ‘Cifrum’ and ‘Atomenergoprojekt’ companies) specializing in nuclear power have paid a visit to the Leningrad NPP’s 1st VVER-1200 power block. More than 100 special translation professionals are to visit the Leningrad NPP for similar technology tours in 2020.

During the tour, the translators familiarize themselves in detail with all major facilities of a nuclear power plant, learn about the principles of how the innovative Russian power blocks operate, their safety systems and the training of the operating staff.

These technical walkthroughs are an integral part of the Rosatom State Corporation’s Single Digital Strategy and the ‘Developing the system of designing VVER NPPs’ program, both having the improvement of technical translations from Russian into English as one of their goals.

The Rosatom State Corporation constructs and launches innovative power blocks that are unique in some ways both in Russia and abroad. To be in a position to promote and to introduce its own projects all over the world, the company needs to train technical experts having impeccable domain knowledge and able to use special terminology both in the source and the target languages.

‘Proper technical translation will let us convey important information to our foreign partner in an accurate way, without any confusion, and it will foster more efficient cooperation between Russia and its partners’, Irina Drimanova, deputy head of the ‘NPP design system development’ Program and one of the experts at the nuclear power digitization company, ‘Cifrum’ (Rosatom State Corporation), noted.

Denis Kotkov, a translator at the Saint-Petersburg design institute of ‘Atomprojekt’, shared his impression of the technical walkthrough: ‘I was highly impressed by the scale of the new Leningrad power blocks and how smart, automated, and innovative they are. The knowledge I have received at the Leningrad NPP today is priceless. It will help me make my work more meaningful, since I better understand the processes taking part at the NPP, which means I can deliver better quality’.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate of the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company and is located in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west from Saint-Petersburg, at the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The Leningrad NPP is the largest one in Russia with regard to the installed capacity (4,200 megawatt) and is the only one featuring two reactor types: it runs three RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type reactors on thermal neutrons with the capacity of 1,000 megawatt) and one 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactor (pressurized water-type reactor with the electric capacity of 1,200 megawatt). The country’s first RMBK-1000 power block was stopped for proper shutdown on December 21,2018. The construction of the 2nd VVER-1200 power block is in progress. The owner and developer of the Leningrad NPP’s replacement capacity construction project is the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company. AO ATOMPROJEKT is the general designer, while the AO TITAN-2 JOINT-STOCK Company is the general contractor.
