The Novovoronezh NPP will have produced over 21 billion kWh of electric power by the end of 2019

By the end of 2019 (as of December 25), the NovovoronezhNPP has produced around 20.8 billion kWh of electric power, which accounts for approx. 10% of the total output from all Russian NPPs. Experts suggest that by the end of this year, the Novovoronezh NPP’s output will reach 21 billion 447 million kWh, which is 8% ahead of the plan set by the FAS.

Currently, the nuclear power plant covers around 92% of the region’s demand for electric power  and  up  to  90%  of  the  Novovoronezh city  heat  demand.  It  supplies  power  to over  20 major industrial companies and 2.3 million residents of the Central Black Earth Region.

This  year  was  the  55thanniversary  of  the  Novovoronezh  NPP,  and  it  brought  a  lot  of professional accomplishments to the team. For instance, the Novovoronezhdelivered on its electric power output commitment set by the FAS ahead of time, and as of December 14, it has already exceeded its target of 19 billion 850 million kWh, which means that the nuclear power plant overdelivered on its promises.

According to Vladimir Povarov, the director of the Novovoronezh NPP, the highlight of the year  was  the  commissioning  of  the  innovative  3+  generation  7thpower  block,  which  took place  on  October  31 –30  days  ahead  of  schedule.  Following  the  commissioniong  of  this innovative  power block,  the  total NPP capacity  increased  by  1.5  times  and  reached  3,840 MW.

On  January  10,  2019,  following  a  large-scale overhaul and the world’s first follow-up  life span extension, the 4thpower block reached its designed capacity. Now its totalservice life span is 60 years.

‘This  is  a  feather  in  the cap  for  our  whole team,  the  team  that  will  have  lots  of  new challenges  and  accomplishments.  We  will  further  advance  the  new  power  blocks’ technologies, extend the life span of other power blocks, make their work safer and more reliable, and, obviously, we will continue working on all our social initiatives’, VladimirPovarovnoted. The  achievements  of  the  Novovoronezh  NPP’s  management team   with   regard   to operational efficiency and sustainable development facilitation have received international recognition.  During  the  closing  meeting  of  the  World  Association  of  Nuclear  Operators’ (WANO)  General  Assembly,  Vladimir  Povarov  received  a  prestigious  award  ‘For  the outstanding credentials in the nuclear power industry’.

The  nuclear  power  plant’s  team  members  take  part  in  a  number  of  the  professional competitions  and  win  them.  Alexander  Zimin  and  Alexander  Rusinov,  the  electric  shop employees, where the first Novovoronezh NPP staff members to become the runner-ups in the ‘Relay protection and automation equipment maintenance and repairs’ competence at the National WorldSkills Hi-Tech Championship.

The  information  and  public  relations  project  run  jointly  by  the  NovoronezhNPP and ‘The Kommersant  Black  Earth’  newspaper  won  the  Russian  National  Media  TECH-2019 competition.

The  Novovoronezh  NPP  is  acommunity-focused  company.  One  of  the  social  aspects  is charity. This  year,  the  nuclear  power  city  of  Novovoronezh  saw  the  opening  of  a  new  tourist attraction –the  monument  commemorating  the  first  VVER-210  reactor,  which  was established  as  a  part  of  the  NPP  anniversary  celebrations.  Some  of  the  new  cultural hotspots  were  set  up  with  some  old  ones  being  refurbished:  the  exhibition  of  the Novovoronezh NPP ‘Peresvet’ scouting force was updated, and the region’s first interactive city museum was opened.

A new external radiation monitoringlabbuilding was completed at the city riverside, and a part of the radiation safety department will celebrate their new residence in early 2020.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980. The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events.

The 4th power block was launched following its upgrade and life span expansion on December 27, 2018. The 1st Novovoronezh NPP-2 power block (Novovoronezh NPP 6th power block) was commissioned on December 27, 2017, with the 2nd Novovoronezh NPP-2 (Novovoronezh NPP 7th power block) following on October 31, 2019.
