12.12.2019  THE INFORMATION AND PUBLIC RELATION DEPARTMENT OF NOVOVORONEZH NPP

Journalists from the People's Republic of Bangladesh are to tell their compatriots about how safe the Novovoronezh NPP is and how rapidly the city of atomic scientists is developing

On December 11, 2019, the representatives of the People's Republic of Bangladesh mass media finished their visit to the Novovoronezh NPP.

The main goal of the trip was to prepare information materials for the general public and the governmental and municipal authorities for the area where the Rooppur NPP is being constructed as well as to film a number of TV spots about the Novovoronezh NPP and the satellite town of Novovoronezh.

During these two days, five journalists from the People's Republic of Bangladesh visited the innovative 3+ generation 6th power block and the new information center of the Novovoronezh NPP. They witnessed how their compatriots, aspiring experts of the Rooppur NPP, are being trained at the Training center simulators. The guests have also paid a visit to the museum of the nuclear power plant’s history. They could see the environment of the city, the brand-new social and sporting facilities with their own eyes and speak directly to the local residents.

‘People living in Ishwardi, a city next to the NPP construction, have a lot of questions about how this object is being constructed and how safe it is. We could see ourselves how the nuclear power plant works and how the city next to it lives. Now we can share our own impressions and disprove the myths. I have already been to Novovoronezh in 2015, and I can see how quickly it is growing. I want to persuade the government of Bangladesh that our region should follow the development path of this city’, Swapan Kumar Kundu, the president of the Ishwardi media club, noted.

In 2011, the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of Bangladesh entered into an intergovernmental Agreement on the construction of the Rooppur NPP on the bank of the river Padma, 160 kilometers away from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. In fall 2013, the foundation stone for the future power plant was laid. According to the plan, the first stage of the NPP will come with two power blocks featuring Russian VVER reactors with the capacity of 1,200 megawatt each. The innovative Novovoronezh NPP power blocks are used as a benchmark for the Rooppur NPP.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980. The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events.
The 4th power block was launched following its upgrade and life span expansion on December 27, 2018. The 1st Novovoronezh NPP-2 power block (Novovoronezh NPP 6th power block) was commissioned on December 27, 2017, with the 2nd Novovoronezh NPP-2 (Novovoronezh NPP 7th power block) following on October 31, 2019.
