The operational technical support is being improved as a part of the international seminar held at the Beloyarsk NPP

The Beloyarsk NPP is continuing its preparation for the OSART mission – this verification by the IAEA is scheduled for 2021. As a part of such mission, international experts audit around 15 areas of operation, which is preceded by the preparation consulting seminars including the IAEA experts.

At present, the Beloyarsk is hosting another seminar for the OSART mission preparation (the 8th one this year) dedicated to the Technical support.

‘The goals of the technical support is fostering safety and reliability, promoting effective operation’, Akop Malkhasian, an IAEA expert having huge experience working in the nuclear power industry in Armenia and Bulgaria, said. – ‘This subject covers multiple directions: it comprises the reactor engineering, modification, fuel handling, operational supervision and many more. It is highly regulated by a number of national and international standards, guidelines and requirements’.

Among the topics discussed at the seminar where the engineering and tech support organizations and functions, safety promotion, operational experts, equipment modification, etc.

All of those are aimed at facilitating safe and reliable operation of the Beloyarsk NPP, as its team faces a double challenge on a daily basis: it needs to both produce electric and heat power to meet the demand at the Ural and to trial run the elements of a self-contained nuclear fuel cycle, which is the basis of the two-component power industry of the future.

The Beloyarsk NPP has come into operation in April 1964. The first power blocks of the Beloyarsk NPP with thermal reactors AMB-100 and AMB-200 has been closed after the accumulated running time. The power block with a fast industrial capacity reactor BN-600 is still on. The power block with a fact reactor BN-800Н is currently being prepared for coming into operation.
