Russian nuclear power experts have discussed the aspects of non-destructive testing with their counterparts from China

Eight nuclear power experts from the People’s Republic of China have paid a visit to the Novovoronezh NPP. The goal of the visit was for them to get acquainted with the new standards of non-destructive metal testing that are being implemented at Russian NPPs.

The Chinese team have met with the top management and the specialists of the Novovoronezh NPP and discussed different aspects of VVER power blocks operational control in Russia, the development and revision of non-destructive testing methods in the country.

The foreign guests have visited the observation deck of the innovative VVER-1200 6th and 7th power blocks, the main control room and the machinery hall of the 6th power block.

‘This is my first trip to the Novovoronezh NPP. I really like being here! My first impression about the new power block is that it’s clean and neat. The team in Novovoronezh has answered all of our questions thoroughly and with lots of patience’, Guan Uyfeng, the deputy director of technical support at the Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation, noted.

The Tianwan NPP is located in the Chinese settlement of Tianwan, Jiangsu province, on the coast of the Yellow Sea. The Tianwan NPP is the largest facility with regard to the economic cooperation between Russia and China. It is constructed based on the Russian NPP-91 with a VVER-1000 reactor type. The 1st and the 2nd power blocks were launched in 2007, the 3rd one followed in 2017, with the 4th one launched in 2018. In March 2019, the master contract for the construction of the 7-8 blocks of the Tianwan NPP was executed.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
