The assembly of the second circuit of the internal reactor containment has been completed at the Kursk NPP-2 1st power block

‘The construction of new power blocks to replace the running ones is one of the most important goals for the Rosatom State Corporation. The assembly of the second circuit of the reactor containment brings us one step further to finalize the construction of the first power block’, Rostislav Kimlik, the deputy chief engineer of the capital construction administration and the head of construction control at the Kursk NPP-2, said. ‘The internal containment is a key element of a power block. It caters for radiation and environment safety. If there is an emergency at the nuclear power plant, this containment will prevent radioactive materials from reaching the environment’.

The containment was built following a double-jointing method, which helped to save the time for the assembly.

Following the installation of the second circuit, the first power block’s reactor building got as tall as +22 meters. The total weight of ten sections of the containment ring exceeds 500 tons, the circumference of the walls is 150 meters. The next phase is to start concreting the internal containment at the +9,100 mark of the 1st power block’s reactor building.

Works are carried out simultaneously by six contractors at 16 facilities of the replacement power plant’s construction site. There are 3,959 construction workers involved. As of now, 9 out of 13 key milestones of this year have been achieved.
