The international WANO experts have noted some of the best practices in terms of temporary modifications management at the Kalinin NPP

Temporary modifications management became the core topic for the WANO support mission taking place at the Kalinin NPP on September 9-14, 2019.

Temporary modifications (TM) are minor changes in the equipment, the systems, the elements and the technology parameters compared to the existing schemas and technical documentations that will only remain for a limited period of time. A huge number of TMs and long-term operation of those increase the possibility of human errors and may result into decreased power block’s reliability and safety in general. This is why it is critical to minimize the number and the duration of TMs.

The mission was organized as an assistance visit during which experts from Ukraine and Russia did high-level reviews of the NPP’s power blocks, observed the way the operating staff is working and had a few interviews with them. They paid special attention to temporary modification’s entry into the operational documentation.

‘An assistance visit is not an inspection or an audit, this is a critical analysis held jointly with the NPP’s staff to verify certain aspects of the plant’s operation that might impact its safety to define ways to improve those’, Galim Musin, the head of the support mission and the WANO adviser, said.

As a result of the mission, a report was prepared summarizing specific recommendations on how to improve the Kalinin NPP’s production in this regard. The report also notes a number of positive practices. The experts have stated that the company has made significant progress in terms of handling TMs, in particular in terms of managing an online database, marking the temporary modifications, and the specific TM-related KPIs introduced at the NPP.

‘The technical support mission is one of the programs that help us find ways to improve the plant’s operation based on the trialed and tested international best practices’, Alexander Dorofeev, the chief engineer at the Kalinin NPP, stated.

An evaluation of how effective the WANO support mission recommendations have been is scheduled in one year after the visit.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the Rosenergoatom. The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area.
