The Rostov NPP: The experts of the World Association of Nuclear Operators have identified 6 best practices of the NPP’s operation

On December 14, 2018, a briefing partnership verification held by the World Association of Nuclear Operators was completed at the Rostov NPP. The goal of the project was to maximize the safety and the reliability of the nuclear power, share information and positive experience of running NPPs from all over the world.

Summarizing the outcomes of the verification, Jacques Regaldo, the chairman of the board of the WANO, said: ‘The evaluation was held by a team of experts representing 10 countries. It enabled us to deeply analyze all aspects of the plant’s production process. We have reached a very high level of understanding with our partners at the NPP. And we sincerely hope that the recommendations developed by our team and conveyed to the NPP will help improve the operational experience and the production capabilities in the future’.

As a result of the observations, several interviews with the plant stuff, and a review of the documentation, the experts have identified six best practices used at the Rostov NPP that could also be applicable for other nuclear power plants in the world.

‘Those are their strong sides. They can be categorized. Some of those apply to the whole WANO, some of those shall be valid within the country only. That said, we will undoubtedly inform the members of the Moscow office and deliver this information to the headquarters in London, which integrates all the data and distributes them to other regional centers’, Vasiliy Aksionov, the responsible member of the WANO’s Moscow Office, noted.

In the meantime, Andrey Salnikov, the director of the Rostov NPP, summed up the positive impact of the cooperation between the WANO and the nuclear power plant: ‘Mr. Regaldo noted that the main goal of the WANO is to help the nuclear power plants further improve their operations in terms of the security. I believe that the fact of launching the 4th power block and its launch and operation performance indicators serve as strong evidence of Mr. Regaldo’s statement. As a result of this productive cooperation, the WANO made a huge contribution with its pre-launch partnership verification that took part over a year ago’.

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
