Leningrad NPP: more than 100 participants of ATOMEKS 2018 forum from Korea and Turkey visited the construction site of LNPP-2

On 5 and 6 December, 2018 more than 100 participants of the 10th International Forum of Nuclear Industry Suppliers ATOMEKS 2018 visited the construction site of the VVER-1200 power unit No 2 of Leningrad NPP.

This year 1670 participants from more than 30 countries took part in the event. The most numerous delegations were the delegations from the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Turkey. Their representatives had technical visit to the construction site of new power units of Leningrad NPP.

Yang Ten Ko, the representative of the distribution department of thermal and nuclear power plants agency (Korea): “Previously I heard a lot about Leningrad NPP and I’d like to express gratitude for the opportunity to be here and for the hospitality we were offered. I was impressed with the high level of operation safety of the NPP, including the defense in depth safety. We were also pleased to know that the VVER-1200 power unit has equipment of Korean production. Now the capacity of nuclear power industry decreases in Korea, but I hope that we’ll have new, more advanced projects and Korean nuclear power industry has future.”

The visit to Leningrad NPP became a unique opportunity for guests from Turkey to see how the super powerful innovative power unit No 2 of Leningrad NPP is being constructed. The guests were told how the main equipment of the unit under construction is installed, what tests are carried out at the already constructed power unit No 2 in order to prove its safe and reliable operation for the next 60 years. The scale of the construction, the innovative project decisions and new industrial methods of construction applied at the construction site attracted interest of the guests; they were impressed with the visit to the largest NPP at the North-West.

Jeida Polat, the representative of the Chamber of Industry of Ankara (Turkey): “I’ve visited Leningrad NPP-2 twice and I’ve seen how fast this site is developed. At the first visit, we were shown how VVER-1200 power unit No 1 was prepared for the important commissioning task – cold and hot trial, and now it is put into industrial operation. It is evident that the power unit No 2 has been developed greatly since then. I am here once more in order to see what power units will be built in your country in the nearest future.”

Leningrad NPP is the branch of Rosenergoatom JSC. The plant is situated in Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west from St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the country’s first power plant with RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite nuclear reactors of channel type with thermal neutrons).NPP operates 4 power units with electric power of 1.000 MW each. Also, the construction of replacement power is carried out. The first power unit with VVER-1200 reactor of Generation 3+ completed its 15-day complex testing successfully on 21 August, 2018. It is on the stage of inspection of the main equipment. The construction of power unit No 2 is in progress. The owner and developer of the construction project of Leningrad NPP replacement power is Rosenergoatom JSC; the General Designer of the project is ATOMPROEKT JSC, and the General Constructor is TITAN-2 JSC.
