Leningrad NPP-2: at the power unit No 2 with VVER-1200 reactor under construction the construction of the envelope of evaporative cooling tower is completed a month earlier

At the site of the second power unit with VVER-1200 of Leningrad NPP the construction of the envelope of the evaporative cooling tower No 3 was completed a month earlier. On 9 October, 2018 the specialists of the contracting organization concreted the last – 107 level of the hydraulic engineering structure.

The evaporative cooling tower is a complex hydraulic engineering facility designed for water cooling in the systems of NPP’s recycling water supply. The megastructure has the hyperboloidal form that is optimal for aerodynamicist, durability and strength.

The construction of the evaporative cooling tower started in August, 2014. The concreting of all levels of the tower was carried out by the slip form method. This method allowed not to dismantle the construction, and significantly increase the process of concreting. The slip form allows to create the monolithic structures with only one horizontal joint at each concreted level, this significantly increases the total strength of the construction.

“The completion of the construction of the envelope of the evaporative cooling tower is one of the key events of 2018 at the second power unit of Leningrad NPP-2 under construction”, the lead engineer of the Construction Monitoring (Technical Supervision) Department of Capital Projects Division of LNPP-2 Pavel Ivanov told. “This is the final stage of works at the tower this year. In spring we will start the works on anticorrosion protection and assembly of precast concrete in the storage reservoir: foundation bed, columns, joists and collars. All these elements are inside the tower and serve as carrying frame on which the spraying device for spraying of the cooling water will be assembled.”

Only one evaporative cooling tower is constructed for the 2nd power unit of a new LNPP-2, but of the bigger size that previous ones. The design height of this facility is 167 m, that is 17 m higher than two towers of the VVER-1200 power unit No 1. For comparison, it is worth mentioning that there is only few such structures in Russia. This is the first evaporative cooling tower of this size in Leningrad Oblast. This design decision allows to significantly cut the capital costs, the auxiliary electric energy consumption, as well as to reduce the area of industrial site of the NPP with the preservation of all requirements on technology and safety. The design working life of the construction structure of the tower is 60 years.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom. The Plant is located at the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the first plant in the country with RBMK-1000 reactors (thermal-neutron heat-pipe cooled uranium-graphite nuclear reactors). The NPP operates four power units with an electric capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first unit of replacement capacities with VVER-1200 reactor is at the physical start-up stage, the second VVER-1200 type unit is under construction. Rosenergoatom  JSC is the customer-developer of the project, ATOMPROEKT JSC is the general designer, and CONTSERN TITAN-2 JSC is the general contractor.
