Gundremmingen NPP (Germany) specialists visited Novovoronezh NPP for experience exchange

The specialists of Gundremmingen NPP (Germany) visited Novovoronezh NPP (a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC, a part of Rosatom’s Electic Power Division) within the Agreement on bilateral cooperation between nuclear power plants.

The delegation of German specialists arrived in order to exchange experience was headed by Technical Director of Gundremmingen NPP Ringel Heiko.

“In the end of December, 2017 we disconnected from the grid the power unit B of our NPP”, Mr. Ringel told. “However, the power unit C will work until 2021. That means that we have a lot of topics to discuss with our Novovoronezh colleagues: safety culture, decommissioning, equipment cleanout, etc. Novovoronezh NPP has power units that are shutdown and are in operation. The cooperation between two power units is useful for both parties. My colleagues and I like to observe the development of Novovoronezh NPP. In the very beginning of our cooperation the experience of German nuclear specialists has been useful for Novovoronezh specialists, and yesterday we saw new power units, and we were impressed.”

During the meeting Novovoronezh NPP Manager Vladimir Povarov told his colleagues from Germany about Rosatom State Corporation and Rosenergoatom JSC, innovative power units of the NPP and social development of Novovoronezh town. “We’ve been cooperating for 25 years”, Vladimir Petrovich said at the opening meeting. “This is a unique example in the practice of the international cooperation: for 25 years we’ve been carrying out the twinning of two nuclear power plants.”

The guests visited the innovative power unit No 1 of NVNPP-2 (No 6 of NVNPP) put into commercial operation in February 2017, and power unit No 2 of NVNPP-2 (No 7 of NVNPP) where commissioning works are carried out. German nuclear specialists also visited the International Training Centre of NVNPP where the specialists of a number of countries-partners of Rosatom are trained and hold their qualification.

German colleagues looked over different simulators and classrooms. The guests gave special interest to the full-scale simulator – the full copy of the unit’s control room (UCR) of new power units.

In August 2017 in Novovoronezh the Agreement on prolongation of the bilateral scientific and technical cooperation was signed, this means that the cooperation between two nuclear power plants will continue.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
