21.09.2018  THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT OF ROSENERGOATOM

Rosenergoatom presented the first stage of Russia’s largest data centre in Tver Oblast

On 21 September, 2018 in Udomlya, Tver Oblast the technical presentation of the commercial sections of the largest in Russia Data Processing Centre (DPC) was carried out. It is the main DPC in the series of data centres of Mendeleev project* implemented near the Kalinin NPP by Rosenergoatom JSC (infrastructure energy operator, a part of Rosatom’s Electric Energy Division).

The facility was visited by a big group of representatives from different regions of Russia - IT directors, engineers, industrial organization managers from Tver Oblast, as well as from Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Presenting the most powerful data centre of Russia, the Deputy General Director – Director on economy and finance of Rosenergoatom JSC Sergey Migalin told about the parameters, work conditions, and competitive advantages of the facility in details. According to him, the location of the DPC near the nuclear power plant and the presence of its own power supply system will provide the DPC with guaranteed high-quality energy supply and the high level of the backup, as well as the highest level of security.

“The NPP is the supporting object of the country’s energy system. It means that it always works, as it is included to the Unified Energy System through Federal Grid Company networks. And even if some units are switched off in several modes, other works. That is why NPP is the best power supply source, especially for such a facility sensitive to the capacity, reliability and quality of electric energy. The second important factor is that any NPP is a facility with the highest level of security at the state level”, S. Migalin said.

According to him, the location of the facility near the NPP also has a number of competitive advantages. First, these are the minimum wholesale prices for electric energy. Second, the cost for technological connection is minimized, as the switch gear and substations already exist. “By now commercial parameters of our DPC are one of the best in the country. You won’t find the facilities of the same level at such a price. We really have a lot to be proud of”, Sergey Aleksandrovich noted.

It is to be recalled that the first stage of the DPC has up to 4,800 server racks with the design capacity of electric energy consumption of 6 kW per one rack. The delivered power of the first sections of the DPC is 48 MW, and over the longer term it is planned to increase the capacity up to 80 MW.

“Today, we can see with our own eyes the technical and engineering architecture implemented by our nuclear standards of reliability. This year the construction of the DPC will be completed, we launch the first stage; this is 48 MW. Also, at the same time we develop the site of the second stage where we are planning to apply and test other decisions that are related to the technology of modular DPC. In other words it will be a certain experimental site. Thus, we are ready for any dialog and partnership and we are very interested in exporting this service all around the world after mastering the technologies and obtaining the optimal technical and engineering decisions”, S. Migalin said.

* The project on construction of Russia’s largest data centre, the main in the series of data centres of Mendeleev project is implemented by Rosenergoatom JSC in partnership with

Rostelekom PJSC. It is one of the key tasks of the company within the expanse of the product line, competency building in managing the data centres and reaching new markets, including foreign ones. This is the first DPC of the Rosenergoatom built in framework of implementation of the State program of “Digital economy of the Russian Federation”. The creation of the series of data centres will provide the citizens of the Russian Federation with equal access to digital state services, as well as the high level of system reliability.

Rosenergoatom  JSC is the leading enterprise of the Electric Energy Division of Rosatom State Corporation, the leader in electric energy generation both in Russia and abroad. It is the largest generating company in Russia and the 2nd largest in the world in terms of the volume of nuclear generating capacity. The Concern includes all 10 Russian nuclear power plants, which grant the status of branches, as well as enterprises that support the activities of the generating company. In total, 35 power units with a total installed capacity of 27.9 GW are operated at 10 Russian nuclear power plants. At present, the nuclear power plants of Russia produce about 18.3% of the total electric energy in the country.
