Leningrad NPP-2: Rostekhnadzor gave permission for operation of the powerplant of the super powerful innovative power unit No 1 with VVER-1200 reactor

At the site of Leningrad NPP-2 one of the key conditions of putting the super powerful innovative power unit No 1 with VVER-1200 reactor of Generation 3+ in the operation is accomplished – Rostekhnadzor gave the permission for operation of its powerplant.”

The received document of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia confirms that the complex of the interrelated equipment and facilities of the starting power unit designed for the production and transmission of the electric energy into the national grid of North-West is completely ready for operation.”

As the Deputy Chief Engineer on electrical equipment of Leningrad NPP under construction Aleksandr Rudnik told, the examination and acceptance of the powerplant was divided into stages and was executed in 1.5 year. Rostekhnadzor inspected several thousands of equipment units involved in the scheme of the power delivery, as well as buildings and facilities where it was situated.

“The results of the inspection showed that the assembly and commissioning of the electric equipment are carried out in full and with high quality. Tests, carried out at the stage of the Pilot and Industrial Operation including the final 15-day testing of the power unit at the nominal capacity level, proved the stable and reliable work of the electric equipment, its compliance with the technical requirements and design characteristics. It means that we can carry out our main task – provide the region with the electric energy safely and without fail”, Aleksandr Rudnik noted.

“We have passed the procedure of the powerplant acceptance as it is prescribed by the law and thus we fulfilled one of the key conditions of the putting the power unit in the operation. In the coming days, we will complete the revision of the main and auxiliary equipment at the starting power unit. After this, we will send all the required documents to Rostekhnadzor, that will examine them and give permission for putting the innovative power unit No 1 with VVER-1200 reactor into industrial operation. We expect that this important event for both industry and country will happen in the nearest time”, the Chief Engineer of Leningrad NPP under construction Aleksandr Belyaev summarized.

According to the preliminary estimates, after the power unit No 1 of LNPP-2 is put into industrial operation, the budget of the Leningrad Oblast will receive more than 3 billion rubles of the additional taxes per year.

The power unit No 1 of LNPP-2 with VVER-1200 reactor is the second unit of such type in the world. The startup of the first power unit was carried out at Novovoronezh NPP in 2016. In due course LNPP-2 will replace the operating power units of Leningrad NPP with RBMK-1000 reactors. The power units with VVER-1200 reactor of Generation 3+ will be operated at the new power plant. They meet all modern, so called post-Fukushima standards of reliability and safety. Now, Leningrad NPP is the largest producer of the electric energy at the North-West of Russia. The power unit generates nearly 50% of the electric energy in the region.

Leningrad NPP is the branch of Rosenergoatom JSC. The plant is situated in Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west from St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the country’s first power plant with RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite nuclear reactors of channel type with thermal neutrons).NPP operates 4 power units with electric power of 1.000 MW each. Also, the construction of replacement power is carried out. The first power unit with VVER-1200 reactor of Generation 3+ completed its 15-day complex testing successfully on 21 August, 2018. It is on the stage of inspection of the main equipment. The construction of power unit No 2 is in progress. The owner and developer of the construction project of Leningrad NPP replacement power is Rosenergoatom JSC; the General Designer of the project is ATOMPROEKT JSC, and the General Constructor is TITAN-2 JSC.
