Rostov NPP: public hearings will be held in Volgodonsk concerning powerup of unit ? 1 up to 104 %

On March 31, 2011, public hearings will be held in Volgodonsk relating to the preliminary version of materials of environment impact assessment (EIA) of power unit ? 1 of the Rostov NPP with the reactor plant capacity of 104 percent of the nominal.

Public hearings will be an important stage of the complex of works aimed at substantiation of possibility of commercial operation. Participants will be designers and experts in the field of the Rostov NPP operation, representatives of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, state and independent ecological organizations, Administration and local authorities, public health services and public organizations, as well as ordinary citizens of the city and the region.

Power unit ? 1 pilot operation with increased capacity of 104 % was preceded by modernization of the equipment and the safety enhancement. Experts in the field of the radiation control and ecology state, that with the reactor plant capacity increase of power unit ? 1 of the Rostov NPP body burden of the population will remain at the level several times lower permitted radiation exposure. For the air this indicator is in 2900 times lower than the minimum significant dose, for the water reservoir-cooler - 7 times lower.

“The results of researches testify to the fact that the radiation and environment condition of the region has not changed, it is characterized as ecologically safe and meets all the requirements of the regulations”, - Elena Kudryavtseva, representative of “Moscow AtomEnergoProject” underlined.

Necessity of increasing of nuclear generation in the south of Russia is caused by the power shortage which is in the region and tends to grow higher. The south of Russia is dynamically developing, and only atomic engineering is capable to provide its growing requirements for power resources.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. The NPP is operated by two power units with VVER-1000-type reactor with installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Power unit No.1 was put into commercial operation in 2001, and the power unit No 2 - in December 2010. Power units 3 and 4 are under construction now.
