Meeting of the Flood Commission was Held at Smolensk NPP

Meeting of the flood commission took place at Smolensk NPP. Deputy Chief Engineer of Smolensk NPP Vladimir Zakharenkov, representatives of Main Department of EMERCOM of Russia in Smolensk region, specialists of Moscow-Oka Basin Water Department for Bryansk and Smolensk regions, and heads of departments and divisions of the nuclear plant took part in the meeting.

First Deputy Head of the Department of NPP Support Systems Yuri Svinin made a report on preparation of Smolensk NPP hydraulic structures to accident-free discharge of flood. He reported on implementation of complex measures on ensuring passage of melt water. According to experts, the amount of expected flood in 2011 will amount to 150 million cubic meters including the expected rainfall in March and April.

For the purpose of preparing for accident-free flood discharge, a higher water discharge as compared with the inflow was performed in the end of November 2010. Due to the fact that the current level of the reservoir is lowered, a reserve capacity is provided.

During the preparation to the flood Smolensk NPP experts examined hydraulic structures, electrics of flood spillway lifting mechanisms, conducted snow surveys in the basin reservoirs and some other actions. The set of measures on flood discharge includes 30 tasks, 19 of them have already been implemented, and the remaining tasks will be implemented within the established time periods.

Having discussed the report of the experts of the Department of Support Systems, the commission concluded that Smolensk NPP is ready to receive the flood waters. All the activities in this direction are performed in a qualitative and timely manner.

Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Every year SNPP supplies to the country electric power system at the average about 20 bln kilowatt-hours of electric power equal to almost 13% of power generated in Rosenergoatom Concern and to more than 80% of that generated by the power plants of Smolensk region.

The cooling pond of Smolensk NPP in terms of water is classified as a large reservoirs. Its area is 42 square kilometers. The dam, built during the construction of reservoir of Smolensk NPP on the Desna River in 1978, belongs to the 1st class of hydraulic structures, designed for seismic resistance of up to 6 points. Its bandwidth capability with account of a high-water year is up to 800 m3/sec. The dam floor height - 23 meters, length Р 2,200 meters.
