Mass media representatives visited Leningrad NPP

Leningrad Region and foreign mass media representatives, in particular, Moscow representatives of Iomiyuri Japanese newspaper and VVC, visited Leningrad NPP.

According to LNPP Chief Engineer Konstantin Kudryavtsev, after Japanese accidents the atomic scientists initiated a series of extended excursions and Тpublic inspectionsУ at Russian NPPs in order to prove a high level of safety and reliability of the modern Russian power units to public and mass media representatives.

ТOn the back of information lack about NPP Fukushima accidents we decided to organize the Тpublic inspectionsУ in order to make the public aware in detail of the measures taken at Russian NPP, to show those facilities, equipment and systems which provide NPP safety and stable operationУ, Konstantin Kydryavtsev reported.

The journalists visited the unit control room, turbine and reactor halls of Leningrad NPP operating power unit, got acquainted with the systems of standby station pumphouse, intended to provide continuous water supply to LNPP power units in case of emergency situation, as well as with the system of stand-by diesel generators which are in constant launch readiness in case of power failure.

According to Chief Engineer, today Leningrad NPP power units fully meet the up-to-date safety requirements due to considerable modernization of all NPP power units conducted in recent years, along with introduction of new safety systems. He also reported that at present time the plant seismic protection was rated for 7-point magnitude.

Answering the VVS correspondent question about the Тpublic inspectionsУ procedure at NPPs, Konstantin Kudryavtsev noted that nuclear power industry had a control system on the part of state regulatory authorities, Rosatom State Corporation Inspectorate-General, and Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC Inspectorate-General. ТIt is they who control NPP activity under the effective documents and existing lawsУ, he said.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the bank of the Gulf of Finland in Sosnovy Bor city, 80 km westward from Saint Petersburg. LNPP was the first in the country to operate RBMK-1000 reactors (graphite-uranium pressure-tube thermal reactors). The NPP operates 4 power units with electric capacity of 1,000 MW each.

Timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is given in the site www.russianatom.ru.
