Rosenergoatom: for 29 years of operation, Russian NPPs generated about 4 trillion 347 billion kWh of electricity

On September 7, 2021 Rosenergoatom (part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation), the largest generating company in Russia, taking the second position in the world in terms of nuclear generating capacity, celebrates its 29th anniversary.

For almost three decades of operation since the foundation of Rosenergoatom in 1992*, Russian nuclear power plants have generated about 4 trillion 347 billion kWh of electricity, and 14 new power units have been commissioned. Besides, today in Russia they construct power unit No. 1 and No. 2 of the Kursk NPP-2 (Kurchatov, Kursk region) with PWR-TOI reactors.

The main activity of Rosenergoatom is still the production of electrical and thermal energy by nuclear power plants and the performance of the functions of an organization operating nuclear facilities (nuclear power plants), radiation sources, storage facilities for nuclear materials and radioactive substances in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.

General Director Andrey Petrov, sending holiday greetings to the team, said: “Rosenergoatom is 29 years old. These years have been rich and fruitful for our company. Today Russian nuclear power engineering is one of the most advanced in the world. Thank you very much for your honest, dedicated work. I wish you new victories and achievements, health, joy, love, family well-being! I am sure we will be able to perform all our ambitious plans."

He also noted that over the years, Rosenergoatom has not only stood the test of time, but has become the largest generating company in Russia and one of the leaders in the world in the operation and construction of nuclear power plants. At the same time, Rosenergoatom is successfully fulfilling its main task – the production of electric and thermal energy at NPPs with guaranteed safety assurance as the highest priority of its activities.

Thus, by the end of 2020, the Rosenergoatom NPPs generated 215.745 billion kWh of electricity, or 103.9% of the generation of the previous 2019. This figure became an absolute record for the generation of electricity by Russian nuclear power plants and surpassed the absolute record of the USSR in 1988, set by all nuclear power plants in the Soviet Union. The share of nuclear power plants in electricity production in Russia at the end of 2020 amounted to more than 20%.

Today, Rosenergoatom consists of 11 operating nuclear power plants, including the floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) in Chukotka, as well as a number of other organizations. A total of 38 power units operate at nuclear power plants with a total installed capacity of over 30.5 GW. The installed capacity utilization factor (ICUF) of Rosenergoatom is at the level of the best world indicators - 81.07%.

The number of employees is more than 35 thousand people.

*FSUE “Russian Concern for the Production of Electric and Thermal Energy at Nuclear Power Plants” was founded by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated 07.09.1992 No. 1055. In 2008, the enterprise went public, the shareholders of

Rosenergoatom are Atomenergoprom (87, 5%) and State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (12.5%).

** Generation is provided taking into account the generation of electricity for all the Rosenergoatom NPPs for the entire 1992, excluding the generation of the Leningrad NPP before 01.04.2002.
