Construction: Reactor support truss installed at NPU No. 2 of Kursk NPP-2

A support truss was installed in the design position in the reactor building of power unit No. 2 that’s currently under construction, signifying the completion of the third state assignment of 2021 at the Kursk NPP-2 site.

The support truss is one of the elements of the reactor shaft in the form of a welded metal structure, which is designed to securely fasten the reactor pressure vessel in the concrete shaft. The truss performs the functions of protecting the reactor from weight and seismic loads.

“Installation of the support truss weighing 83 tons was carried out using a Terex Demag CC8800 crane. Such work is referred to as a complex type of installation, since with large dimensions of the structure, the tolerances of alignment relative to the reactor shaft are only 2 mm. Taking into account the experience of similar work on the first unit allowed the specialists of the branch of Electrospetsmontazh, who assembled the support truss, to cut the installation time by half,” said Aleksey Buldygin, head of the Kursk NPP-2 Capital Construction Department.

The completion of the work will allow to begin the construction of the reactor shaft from the 11 meter mark to the 16.5 meter mark.

At the next stage, the builders will install a thrust truss designed to secure the reactor vessel at the upper level.
