One year has passed since the floating power unit Akademik Lomonosov arrived to Pevek: how the northernmost Russian town is changing

The town of Pevek (Chukotka AR) celebrates one-year anniversary of the floating power unit (FPU) arrival to its port. The Akademik Lomonosov FPU operates as a part of the floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP, project of the Rosatom State Atomiс Energy Corporation).

For the last year, a number of measures aimed at developing urban infrastructure and improving living standards has been taken; nuclear executives have backed up these measures. For example, JSC Rosenergoatom  has been a contributor to the 45 million rubles funding for the reconstruction of the Pevek cinema theatre and the Chaunski Regional Museum buildings, as well as for cultural and educational projects; more than 20 million rubles were allocated to equip the Pevek hospital; 5 million rubles were allocated to help low-income families, as well as to the refurbishment of playgrounds and kindergartens.

Among other causes, a considerable sum has been contributed to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the Pevek urban district. Due to this, in the nearest future it will be possible to refurbish the seafront, build a sport and recreation centre and an indoor hockey rink, and a lot more.

The opening of the Atom-Class in Pevek as a part of the Rosatom School corporate project is scheduled for the 2020; this project is backed by The Association of the nuclear power plants locations (the ATR AES Fund) municipal development fund. In addition, the Pevek urban district received 2.8 million rubles award for three projects that have won the ATR AES Fund social projects contest.

To recap, in June 2020 the floating nuclear thermal power plant provided the heat to the 5th micro-district of the town for the first time; for 2021 it is scheduled to connect all other districts of Pevek to the FNPP. As Vitaly Trutnev (Deputy CEO, Floating Nuclear Thermal Power Plant branch manager) said, ‘The development of a permanent scheme for the town heat supply from the floating nuclear power plant will be finished in 2021. As a result, in the near future the FNPP will be able to completely replace the capacity of the obsolete Chaunskaya TPP’.
