Leningrad NPP-2: key documents confirming the completion of power unit No 1 construction and its readiness for commissioning has been signed

On 15 October, 2018, Sergey Perevoshchikov, the Head of the North-European Interregional Territorial Administration for Nuclear and Radiation Safety Supervision of Rostekhnadzor, presented the Plant Manager of Leningrad NPP Vladimir Pereguda the Statement of Conformity (SOC) of the constructed power unit No 1 with the VVER-1200 reactor of Leningrad NPP-2 (No 5 of Leningrad NPP) with the technical requirements and design documentation.

Earlier, on 12 October, the acceptance commission chaired by the Director General of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of Rosatom State Corporation) Andrey Petrov signed an acceptance certificate for the completed VVER-1200 power unit of LNPP, which states that the facility was completed in accordance with the project, sanitary-epidemiological, environmental, fire safety, building requirements and codes, state standards, and ready to be put into commercial operation.

The signing of these key documents is the main stage for further processing of the remaining documentation and opens the way for the commissioning of the VVER-1200 power unit No 1 of Leningrad NPP into commercial operation.

By the time of commissioning the LNPP VVER-1200 power unit No 1 had generated more than 2 billion kWh of electric energy. According to preliminary estimates, after it is put into commercial operation, the economic effect in the form of additional taxes to the consolidated budget of the Leningrad Oblast will be more than 3 billion rubles per year.

The new capacities will ensure a high level of energy security of the country, will allow to continue the implementation of a number of large regional investment projects requiring significant energy consumption, and will also contribute to the growth, development and strengthening of the financial independence of Sosnovy Bor.

For reference:

The innovative, most powerful modern power units with water-water power reactors VVER-1200 that are built at LNPP belong to the latest generation 3+. They use the most advanced achievements and developments that meet all post-Fukushima requirements. Such units are unique and have no analogues in the world. The first similar unit was launched at the end of 2016 at NVNPP-2 (Novovoronezh). Compared with traditional power units of the same type, the VVER-1200 project has a number of advantages that significantly increase its economic performance and safety. The main feature of the VVER-1200 project is a unique combination of active and passive safety systems that make the plant as resistant as possible to external and internal influences. In particular, a unit with the VVER-1200 reactor uses: a melt trap (a device used to localize the core melt), passive heat removal system through steam generators or SPOT (designed to ensure long-term heat removal from the core into the atmosphere in the absence of any source of power supply), etc.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom. The Plant is located at the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the first plant in the country with RBMK-1000 reactors (thermal-neutron heat-pipe cooled uranium-graphite nuclear reactors). The NPP operates four power units with an electric capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first unit of replacement capacities with VVER-1200 reactor is at the physical start-up stage, the second VVER-1200 type unit is under construction. Rosenergoatom  JSC is the customer-developer of the project, ATOMPROEKT JSC is the general designer, and CONTSERN TITAN-2 JSC is the general contractor.
