Leningrad NPP-2: at the VVER-1200 power unit No 2 under construction the dome of the inner reactor containment was established

At Leningrad NPP-2 VVER-1200 power unit No 2 under construction the last element of the inner reactor containment - the dome of leak-tight facing with weight of 200 tons was installed. The dome was lifted with the help of superpower Liebherr crane which arm was built for another section of 12 meters. The day before the operation the specialists also had completed the establishment of the final equipment located at the dome part of the IRC. These are the elements of the sprinkler system, ventilation, lighting and operating floor.

"Today's operation is the result of many months of work and there is no doubt that it is the key event of the new power unit's construction", the Chief Engineer of Capital Construction Management of Leningrad NPP-2 Sergey Prokhorov told. "Before the installation we had carried out the pre-assembly works of all its components at the assembly stand. This helped to carry out all works with the high quality."

For several months the specialists of the contractor organizations had been carrying the assembly of the lower and upper part of the dome close to each other at the same time.

As practice shows the assembly and welding of such large constructions at the ground is a really effective step to reduce work, increase safety of the assembly operations, improve the assembly quality and optimize the power unit's construction terms.

The installation of the dome at its proper location is the last stage of assembly of metal constructions of the inner reactor containment building. In the nearest time the specialists will proceed to the reinforcing and concreting the IRC at the mark of +44.600. The height of the building with the dome will reach 66.6 m.

The inner containment of the reactor building is foreseen by the Leningrad NPP new power units’ construction design. During the operation of the power unit the IRC will exclude the radioactive release in the environment in the case of the emergency.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom. The Plant is located at the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the first plant in the country with RBMK-1000 reactors (thermal-neutron heat-pipe cooled uranium-graphite nuclear reactors). The NPP operates four power units with an electric capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first unit of replacement capacities with VVER-1200 reactor is at the physical start-up stage, the second VVER-1200 type unit is under construction. Rosenergoatom JSC is the customer-developer of the project, ATOMPROEKT JSC is the general designer, and CONTSERN TITAN-2 JSC is the general contractor.
