The Novovoronezh NPP: the world’s first 3+ generation power block has attained 100% of its capacity

Prior the working visit to the Voronezh NPP paid by Alexey Likhatchev, the Rosatom State Corporation CEO, it was announced that the innovative 3+ generation VVER-1200 power block has attained 100% of its capacity.

The Novovoronezh NPP's 6th power block complies with the top possible operational security standards and addresses all post-Fukushima requirements set by IAEA. Its main peculiarity is the combination of the active and the passive security systems that do not require any involvement of the NPP’s staff. In particular, the power block uses one-of-a-kind passive heat transfer from the reactor system, hydrogen re-combiners, and molten core catcher.

There was a certain reason why the Novovoronezh NPP was chosen as the first atomic power facility to be used by the head of Rosatom. “The Novovoronezh NPP is the only nuclear power block of such type that has head blocks only. At the moment, a VVER-1200 power block is being prepared here for commissioning into commercial operation. This one is very important for Rosatom since it’s the world’s first 3+ generation power block that will act as a referent one for constructing NPPs abroad in the countries that have executed agreements with the Russian company. The fact that the innovative block has attained 100% of its capacity is a huge success for the Russian atomic power technologies”, Alexey Likhatchev noted.

The Novovoronezh NPP is a great sample of the whole VVER evolutionary line. It keeps the 1st and the 2nd VVER-210 and VVER-365 power blocks that were constructed during the Soviet times and have been shut down since that time, the VVER-440 4th and the VVER-1000 5th power block, the innovative VVER-1200 6th power block and the construction site for the 7th one, which is also designed to operate the new VVER-1200 reactor. According to the Rosenergoatom’s forecast, in 2016 the Novovoronezh NPP will account for 16.2 billion kilowatt-hours, with the 6th power block delivering around 2.2 billion kilowatt-hours.

In 2012, the Agreement between Rosatom and the Voronezh Region Government came into effect, ever since acting as an effective tool for supporting the provision of urban amenities in the city of Novovoronezh thanks to the additional tax revenues from the State Corporation’s companies. During the period of 2013-2015, the city development programs received additional 712.3 million rubles, with 2016 expected to bring similar funding. The new projects elaborated at the Novovoronezh NPP will increase the Rosatom’s tax base, thus laying the foundation for further regional development and facilitating better life standards for the local population.
