The Beloyarsk NPP: the BN-800 “power block of the future” prototype has been fully tested with its 100% capacity
The Beloyarsk NPP’s 4th power block operating fast neutron BN-800 reactors, which is supposed to become a prototype for more power-packed reactors of such kind, have gone through the 15-days comprehensive test at 100% of its capacities. That said, the power block has been confirmed to be capable of dealing with the rated capacity within the designed parameters without any deviations. This was the last stage of the power block’s equipment trials.
There is still a number of arrangements before the power block is commissioned. The Rostechnadzor’s commission will run a final check to see if the power block complies with the project and will issue a confirmation license on it. Afterwards, the Rosatom Corporation will draft a resolution approving the power block’s commissioning. All of those procedures are planned to be completed in September 2016.
The Beloyarsk NPP’s 4th power block delivered its first kilowatt-hours back in December 2015. Since early 2016, the 4th power block has produced over 1.58 billion kilowatt-hours so far. By the end of 2016, it is planned to get to the output of 3.5 billion kilowatt-hours.
Experts believe that the fast-neutron reactors have lots of advantages for nuclear power development. They can help to substantially extend the nuclear power industry’s fuel base and to reduce the amount of radioactive waste based on a closed-loop nuclear fuel cycle.
* A BN-800 (“fast sodium”, with the electric capacity of 880 megawatts) reactor is an experimental production reactor running on fast neutrons with sodium being its liquid metal coolant.
The Beloyarsk NPP has come into operation in April 1964. The first power blocks of the Beloyarsk NPP with thermal reactors AMB-100 and AMB-200 has been closed after the accumulated running time. The power block with a fast industrial capacity reactor BN-600 is still on. The power block with a fact reactor BN-800Н is currently being prepared for coming into operation.
