Rosenergoatom: WANO Corporate Peer Review has been started at Russian NPPs

On April 11, 2011 expert groups of World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) went to Russian nuclear power plants within the framework of the Corporate Peer Review, which is held in Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC on April 9-22, 2011.

The aim of the review is to use some international experience in order to improve the activity of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and its branches. These days, four expert groups, comprised of WANO, Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, EDF and IAEA representatives, will personally visit 7 out of ten nuclear power plants.

The activity of nuclear power plants and the Concern Central Office will be inspected in three directions: corporate administration and management, corporate supervision and control and corporate engineering and technical support, human resources and communications.

At the same time, an interview with representatives of the most distant-located plant – Bilibino NPP – will be held in the form of a videoconference. Two nuclear power plants – Kalinin and Smolensk – were visited by experts during the preparatory stage in autumn 2010 (according to the results there were drawn reports, specifying the examples of best practices of the nuclear power plants).

In addition, the experts will hold an interview with the authorities of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The result of the Corporate Peer Review will be a final report, specifying aspects of Concern activities to be improved as well as best practices that may be offered other world operators of nuclear power plants.

WANO is a noncommercial organization which is not a supervisory authority. WANO was established in 1989 by operating organizations in order to exchange operating experience. At present, all organizations, which operate NPPs, are members of WANO, which acts independently of state and regulatory authorities and works exceptionally for and on behalf of its members – nuclear power plants. Rosenergoatom Concern is one of the most active operating organizations of WANO structure. WANO consists of four regional centers, located in Moscow, Atlanta, Paris and Tokyo. The coordination centre is located in London. Governing bodies are Councils of governing regional centers and WANO respectively. The Moscow centre consists of 37 organizations from Armenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, the Ukraine, Finland, the Czech Republic, India and China.

Peer reviews are one of the long-term programs of WANO. They are voluntary, i.e. they are always held on the initiative of the receiving party. Upon completion of a review a confidential report is drawn up specifying the strengths of the nuclear power plant operation and the aspects of industrial activity to be improved. The report is handed over only to the inspected plant and organization operating this plant.
