Rosenergoatom: The Act of readiness of floating NPP for nuclear fuel loading is signed

On 26 December, 2016 the Act of readiness of shipbuilding company Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye LLC and floating nuclear power unit (FPU) Akademik Lomonosov for nuclear fuel loading was signed. The Act has been approved by Alexey Kadilov, the General Director of the Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye LLC plant. During the first half of 2017 it is planned to load nuclear fuel and physically start up the floating power unit.

The construction of Akademik Lomonosov – the first (head) floating nuclear heat and power plant (FNPP) with capacity of 70 MW on the basis of floating power unit (FPU) with two KLT-40S reactor plants – is conducted within the framework of the contract concluded in 2012 between Rosenergoatom Concern JSC and Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye LLC. In 2015 the formation of the hull with additional structures was fully completed; the marine and power-generating equipment and technical systems were installed.

In 2016 the dockside trials of the FPU’s facilities and equipment started in accordance with the established programs and methods of the accepted test procedures. The town of Pevek, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug was chosen as the basing site for FNPP. In 2017 the nuclear fuel will be delivered to the Baltiysky Zavod, loaded into the reactor, and a physical start up of the reactor plants will be performed.

Rosenergoatom Concern continues the recruitment and training of FNPP operational personnel. The general design contractor – Atomenergo CJSC – has conducted survey and design works, and project documentation development for FNPP onshore facilities and hydraulic engineering structures (OHES) in Pevek.

Preparatory period works at the construction site of the Pevek’s FNPP onshore facilities and hydraulic engineering structures were launched in September 2015. In 2016 a contract for the construction of hydraulic engineering structures was signed. The works’ contractor – Trest Zapsibgidrostroy LLC – is a leading Russian company in the field of hydraulic engineering structures and transport facilities construction. The materials and equipment for the OHES construction were delivered in Pevek through the Northeast Passage during the period of September-December 2016. And after that the full-scale works were started at the construction site.

In 2016 the federal budget granted Rosenergoatom Concern JSC a construction grant for the construction of the OHES in Pevek in the form of the Russian Federation property contribution to Rosatom State Corporation on nuclear power generation complex development (in particular, on small nuclear power plant construction); the government task of OHES construction fulfillment in 2016 has been successfully achieved.

Completion of the construction of the onshore facilities and hydraulic engineering structures, delivery of floating power unit in Pevek and putting NPP into operation is planned in 2019.

The Rosenergoaton Concern (the power division of the Rosatom State Corporation) includes 10 Russian nuclear power stations bearing the status of the Concern’s affiliate companies, along with the vendors catering for the needs of the generation company. All in all, the 10 nuclear power stations operate 34 power blocks* (*excluding the Novovoronezh NPP’s 6th power block (The Novovoronezh NPP-2 1st one) being at the pilot production stage): 17 of them operate VVER reactors (12 VVER-1000 power blocks and 6 VVER-440 power blocks of different modifications); 15 of them with channel reactors (11 power blocks with RMBK-1000 reactors, four power blocks with EGP-6 reactors); and 2 power blocks with fast neutron sodium cooling reactors (BN-600 and BN-800).
At the moment, the Rosenergoatom NPPs account for 18.6% of the whole electricity output in the
country.
