Rosenergoatom: Minister of Energy of Republic of South Africa Visits Centre for Virtual Prototyping of Concern

On June 4, 2012 the Centre for Virtual Prototyping of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC was visited by Minister of Energy of the Republic of South Africa, Elizabeth Dipuo Peters. The visit took place under the participation program of Mrs. Peters in the International Sci-Tech Forum “Atomexpo-2012”.

During the visiting of the Centre, Minister of Energy of RSA met with Director of the Design-and-Engineering Branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, Sergey Yegorov, who presented the project of VVER-TOI (typical, optimized, informative pressurized water reactor), and demonstrated the capabilities of the Centre for Virtual Prototyping for 3D project models.

During the meeting both sides discussed the issues of safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants with reactors of VVER model technology. “We are facing a serious task to convince the public that the nuclear power industry may be safe. We must work hard to ensure transparency in respect of matters related to the risks of radiation, and to disperse fears, which appeared after the events in Japan. The main focus is safety. Do not be surprised that in the process of collaboration we will have to ask many questions. This is a new industry for us, and to realize our plans, we need your professional support,” said in conclusion Elizabeth Dipuo Peters.

Rosenergoatom Concern includes all 10 nuclear power plants of Russia, which have the status of the branches of the Concern, as well as the enterprises ensuring the activity of the power generating company.

In total, at 10 NPPs of Russia, there are operated 33 power units: 17 power units have VVER model reactors (among them 11 units have VVER-1000 model reactors, and 6 units have VVER-440 model reactors of various modifications); 15 units have pressurized-tube reactors (11 units - RBMK-1000 model reactors, four units - EGP-6 model reactors); 1 unit has the fast fission sodium cooled reactor BN-600.

The electric power generation rate of the nuclear power plants of Russia amounts to 16,6 %.
