Representatives of 12 nations took part in a large technical tour to the Novovoronezh NPP

On July 3, 2019, a major technical tour over the Novovoronezh NPP was held for the representatives of the Rosatom Academy of Technology*. The main goal of the visit is to expand the international cooperation in the realm of nuclear education.

The event was attended by 23 specialists from 12 countries, which include both nuclear power enthusiasts – Finland, Italy, Sweden, Romania, India, Slovakia – and nuclear industry novices, such as Turkey, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Nigeria, Bolivia, Indonesia.

In order to get themselves acquainted with the top-notch technologies at the Novovoronezh NPP, teachers and students from leading tech universities, scientists, governmental representatives and nuclear power experts paid a visit to the plant.

‘We have heard a lot about the Novovoronezh NPP, which is why coming here and witnessing the outcomes of the enormous construction project, getting comprehensive answers to all our questions is a unique opportunity we couldn’t miss. The innovative Novovoronezh NPP power blocks serve as a reference for us. We believe we will have a similar plant in Uzbekistan in the nearest 8-9 years’, Otabek Amanov, the director of the NPP construction unit at the Nuclear power development agency of the Ministry of Energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan, said.

During the trip, the delegation visited the observation deck of the innovative 3+ generation power block, the machinery hall, and the control room of the 6th power block with a VVER-1200 reactor. They also took a look at the spray cooling ponds and the cooling towers. Additionally, the team got a chance to learn about the staff training process at the new training center of the Novovoronezh NPP.

Such tours to the Novovoronezh NPPs are held on a regular basis and foster the promotion of the nuclear power industry in the world.

*The Rosatom Academy of Technology is an autonomous non-profit supplementary vocational education institution specializing in continuing professional education and occupational retraining for nuclear power and production specialists and managers, as well as for staff certification.

The organization is an educational and scientific establishment of the Rosatom State Corporation in the realm of safe usage of nuclear power, control, national security, operational and supporting processes. The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017.
