Over 200 representatives from 15 Russian and foreign cities took part in the XV International ‘Nuclear Power Safety’ Conference in Volgodonsk

On June 6, 2019, the XV international research and development conference named ‘Nuclear Power Safety’ was held at the Volgodonsk National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.

Over 200 people from scientific and research & development companies representing 15 Russian and foreign cities, the representatives of Rosatom, the managers from the Rostov Region Ministry of Industry and Energy, the Rostov NPP, the city of Volgodonsk, the subsidiaries of the Rosatom State Corporation and students participated in the conference.

75 presentations were made at the conference across multiple sections: ‘NPP power blocks’ design and construction’, ‘NPP equipment production and maintenance’, ‘NPP power blocks’ operation’, ‘NPP operation environmental and radiation safety’, ‘Safety culture at nuclear power facilities: social, cultural, economic, and informational aspects’. The managers, associates and veterans of the Rostov NPP were actively involved in all sections.

This year, the traditional R&D conference at the Volgodonsk National Research Nuclear University MEPhI was dedicated to the 65th anniversary of nuclear power, which traces back to the launch of the first NPP in Obninsk on June 26, 1954.

During the plenary session, presentations were delivered by Valentina Rudenko, the head of the Volgodonsk National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, professor, PhD in Social Sciences, Igor Sorokin, the Rostov Region Minister of Industry and Energy, Victor Melnikov, the head of Volgodonsk city administration, and Liudmila Tkachenko, the chairman of the city duma and the head of Volgodonsk.

‘Nuclear generation accounts for 69% of the total amount of electric power produced in the Rostov Region. The Rostov NPP is a huge investment driver for our region’, Igor Sorokin, the region’s Minister of Industry and Energy, noted.

Liudmila Tkachenko, the chairman of the city duma and the head of Volgodonsk, made a statement about the contribution of the Volgodonsk National Research Nuclear University MEPhI into the way staff is trained for the nuclear power industry. ‘Safety begins with people! And the Volgodonsk National Research Nuclear University MEPhI means proper education’, Liudmila Tkachenko stressed.

Andrey Salnikov, the director of the Rostov NPP, presented his report during the plenary session on the subject ‘Advancements in the Rostov NPP power blocks’ safety: from the 1st power block to the 4th power block’ and addressed a number of questions from the participants of the scientific forum. ‘Safety is the cornerstone for all operations of a nuclear power. It means the perfection of all NPP structures and systems. But the most important part is the improvement of the safety culture’, Andrey Salnikov said.

The annual international research and development conference in Volgodonsk plays a huge role for the scientific community, the students, and the nuclear power industry companies. It enables active discussions between the production specialists, the scientists, and the youngsters, giving them a common ground to share ideas and best practices.

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
