Rosenergoatom: the ‘Akademik Lomonosov’ powership is ready for operation

The integrated test of the nuclear power facility (NPF) have been completed at the main powership named ‘Akademik Lomonosov’.

The main goal of the test was to verify that the NPF has achieved the technological parameters stipulated in the floating power block’s design and make sure that it is fully ready for operation.

On March 31, 2019, the reactor facilities No.1 and No 2 of the floating power block were successfully set to 100% of their capacity. The trials confirmed that both the main and the auxiliary equipment of the floating power block as well as its process control systems were working in a stable manner.

‘Completing the trials successfully is a huge accomplishment for the big team of specialists at Rosatom. During the past months, we have conducted all the necessary test of the NPF systems and equipment at the powership while increasing its capacity gradually in accordance with the schedule. The outcomes of the trials have shown that the technological parameters stipulated in the floating power block’s design have been achieved’, Andrey Petrov, CEO at Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (a part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation), said.

He also explained that the results of all trials will be reported in the floating power block acceptance certificate of the governmental commission stating that the block is ready for operation, a license for which is scheduled for July.

In the meantime, the team working in the city of Peveka (the Chukotka Autonomous Region) plans to complete the activities related to building the shore and hydraulic facilities for the Floating NPP till the end of this year alongside the infrastructure facilitating the transfer of electric power into the ‘Chukotenergo’ power networks and the transfer of heat into the city’s heat networks. So far, the works are conducted in accordance with the schedule.

In order not to hamper the maritime traffic in summer 2019, the powership is to be towed to the port of Peveka where it will replace the retired capacities of the Bilibino NPP and the Chaun CHPP as a part of the Floating NPP. The latter is expected to release its first electric power into the network in December 2019.

The floating nuclear power unit (FPU) (FPU) “Akademik Lomonosov” of project 20870 is the main project of the series of mobile transportable power units of low power. It is designed to work as a part of the Floating Nuclear Thermal Power Plant (FNPP) and is of a new class of power sources on the basis of Russian technologies of nuclear shipbuilding.

The nuclear power plant has two KLT-40S reactor units that can generate up to 70 MW of electric energy and 50 Gcal/hr of heat energy during its normal operation. This is enough to keep the activity of the town populated with 100,000 people. The FPU is the unique and the world’s first project of the mobile transportable power unit of low power. It is designed for the operation at the areas of the Extreme North and the Russian Far East. Its main task is to provide the remote industrial plants, port cities, as well as the offshore gas and oil platforms with electric energy. The FNPP is designed with the great margin of safety that exceeds all possible threats and makes nuclear reactors invincible for tsunamis and other natural disasters. In addition, the nuclear processes at the floating power unit meet all requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and do not pose any threat to the environment.
