Rosatom is ready to provide countries constructing NPPs following Russian projects with infrastructure solutions related to data centers construction

The Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (a part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom) is ready to replicate its infrastructure solutions on data centers construction next to NPPs both within Russia and for countries that follow Russian nuclear power plants construction projects.

This statement was made on April 15, 2019 by Sergey Migalin, the head of ‘Mendleev’ project and the Economy and Finances Director at the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company during ATOMEXPO-2019 in Sochi. He delivered his presentation ‘Data centers as a new development trend for Rosenergoatom’ at the International Forum.

As of now, Rosenergoatom has already launched the commercial operation of the Kaliniskiy Data Center (Udomlia city, the Tver Region) next to the Kalinin NPP with the designed capacity of 50 megawatt, which makes it the largest data center in Europe. The second batch with the capacity of approximately 30 megawatt is now under construction nearby.

According to Mr. Migalin, taking into consideration the expertise accumulated during the Kalininskiy Data Center construction, the company is willing to share its infrastructure solutions for data center sites with the whole country, which means that a whole network of data centers and infrastructure platforms for operating companies will be established.

‘We have already elaborated a 50-megawatt platform for a similar data center based on the Kolsk NPP in the Poliarnye Zori city in the Murmansk Region. It is now at high readiness, so once we have a first major lead, we will use the off-the-shelf technology to implement it’, he added.

Mr. Migalin also noted that Rosatom is ready to implement these infrastructure solutions in other countries. ‘When we come to a country that doesn’t do any nuclear generation but uses Russian technologies to build NPPs, it is typical to accompany the construction project with additional infrastructure initiatives. One of the solutions offered within Rosatom’s portfolio is related to data centers, and we are happy to work on such projects’, Sergey Migalin said.

Rosenergoatom JSC is the leading enterprise of the Electric Energy Division of Rosatom State Corporation, the leader in electric energy generation both in Russia and abroad. It is the largest generating company in Russia and the 2nd largest in the world in terms of the volume of nuclear generating capacity. The Concern includes all 10 Russian nuclear power plants, which grant the status of branches, as well as enterprises that support the activities of the generating company. In total, 35 power units with a total installed capacity of 27.9 GW are operated at 10 Russian nuclear power plants. At present, the nuclear power plants of Russia produce about 19% of the total electric energy in the country.
