Leningrad NPP-2: at the second power unit with VVER-1200 reactor the assembly of technological systems for flushing on the open reactor started

In the reactor building of the VVER-1200 power unit No 2 of Leningrad NPP-2 large-scale works on assembly of technological systems needed for carrying out the most important operation of 2019 – a flushing of technological systems on the open reactor – started.

As Kirill Mazurin, the Deputy Chief Engineer on Construction and Assembly works of Capital Construction Management of LNPP- 2, explained the specialists assemble armature, hanger-support system elements, as well as carry out the pre-assembly and routing of pipelines that connect the main equipment of the reactor unit.

“The pipeline assembly is one of the most labour-consuming works in the reactor building: in total the contractor will assemble near 350 tons of pipelines. During the flushing the chemically demineralized water will be fed into the pipelines in order to check their penetrability and to clean them from possible mechanical pollution: sand, oxidation and dusk”, Kirill Mazurin told.

During the assembly of the pipelines the specialists will perform more than 8,000 weld joints. The management of LNPP imposes the strictest requirements for the quality of the joints as they must stand the significant loads during operation.

“All the completed joints are subject to the considerable inspection with the use of different nondestructive testing methods – visual, dimensional, radiographic, ultrasonic and capillary methods. It guarantees safe and reliable operation of pipelines as part of unit’s technological systems”, Denis Shnel, the Head of Metal Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Control Department of Leningrad NPP-2, stressed.

In accordance with the set schedule all works on assembly of technological systems for the start of flushing at the VVER-1200 power unit No 2 will be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2019.

Leningrad NPP is the branch of Rosenergoatom JSC. The plant is situated in Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west from St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the country’s first power plant with RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite nuclear reactors of channel type with thermal neutrons).NPP operates 4 power units with electric power of 1.000 MW each. Also, the construction of replacement power is carried out. The first power unit with VVER-1200 reactor of Generation 3+ completed its 15-day complex testing successfully on 21 August, 2018. It is on the stage of inspection of the main equipment. The construction of power unit No 2 is in progress. The owner and developer of the construction project of Leningrad NPP replacement power is Rosenergoatom JSC; the General Designer of the project is ATOMPROEKT JSC, and the General Constructor is TITAN-2 JSC.
