Novovoronezh NPP was visited by specialists of the Belarusian nuclear power plant under construction

On 2 November, 2018, the Belarusian NPP nuclear safety engineers have finished their working visit to Novovoronezh NPP (NVNPP).

Its goal was to share Russian practices in monitoring the leak-tightness of fuel assemblies (FA) at an operating reactor unit, as well as to study the performance characteristics of the power units’ primary and secondary circuits.

“Your VVER-1200 reactor unit is exactly the same as ours. The unit here has already passed the first fuel loading and is working from the second one. We came to adopt the methods of measuring, calculating and controlling. These methods use the latest developments, the experience of different types of reactor units. We have gained tremendous experience, and all the questions we are interested in have been answered”, Eduard Semirenko, the head of the laboratory for monitoring the tightness of shells of the Nuclear Safety Department of the Belarusian NPP, said.

During the three-day visit, the Belarusian guests have seen the main facilities of the power unit No 6 of Novovoronezh NPP, the main control unit (MCU), engine room, have visited the controlled area (CA) and the observation platform of the Phase 4 of NVNPP.

The Belarusian NPP is being built in the Astravyets District of the Grodno Oblast. It will consist of two power units with a total capacity of up to 2.4 thousand MW. An innovative project with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors has been chosen for the construction of the first Belarusian NPP.
Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
