The decision on the construction of the power unit No 5 of Beloyarsk NPP with the BN-1200 reactor can be made in 2021. This was announced by Andrey Petrov, the Director General of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the Rosatom Electric Power Division), during the Director's Day Briefing that took place at Beloyarsk NPP on 2 August, 2018.

According to the head of Rosenergoatom, the new power unit with the BN-1200 reactor will be used for commercial purposes only, which means that its technical and economic results should be comparable with the best world nuclear and combined-cycle power units.

Right now the developers’ efforts are concentrated in this direction; the work is being carried out within the framework of the Proryv project. Completion and result review of the R&D and construction work and the project documentation development is planned for the end of 2020.

If the commercial competitiveness of the BN-1200 reactor power unit is confirmed, it will take several years to develop the necessary justifications, obtain a construction license, pass the state expertise, and develop project documentation and other organizational arrangements. Thus, the construction of the power unit itself might start in 2024-2025, and end in 2031 - 2032.

The BN-1200 is designed to play an important role in the formation of two-component nuclear energy. Such system has fast and thermal neutrons reactors that complement each other, providing a closed nuclear fuel cycle, extended fuel reproduction, reusability of spent nuclear fuel components, and minimization of radioactive waste. But the timing of the implementation of the two-component system largely depends on when the reasonable commercial efficiency of the project of the power unit with the fast BN-1200 reactor will be achieved.
