Leningrad NPP-2: 600 cubic meters of concrete were laid in three shifts at the power unit No 2 construction site

At Leningrad NPP-2 (a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, a part of Rosatom’s Electric Power Division) the contractor’s experts completed concreting the penultimate tier of the inner containment shell (ICS) at the constructed power unit No 2 with VVER-1200 reactor; and thus the concreting works are about 90% over.

“A significant amount of work has been done – almost 600 cubic meters of concrete were laid for three working shifts. In terms of concrete mixing trucks, it is about 100 engines. The inner containment shell of the reactor building – which has 44 meters in diameter – has become almost 3.5 meters higher”, Pavel Ivanov, the Chief Engineer of the Technical Supervision Department of Leningrad NPP under construction, described.

He also explained that all the conditions necessary for operating in low temperature had been met when building the ICS. So, 16 special heat guns were used to maintain the temperature of +15 degrees Celsius necessary for laying the concrete mixture.

In addition, the concrete care activities are currently being carried out. Their main purpose is to ensure optimum temperature and humidity conditions for strength development. To preserve heat and protect against external precipitation, the experts have built a special awning shelter over the reinforcing cage.

At the next stage the specialists will continue their work on reinforcing the last tier of the inner containment cylindrical part to a mark of +44.60 meters, and then they will begin installing the crane girders of the reactor compartment’s most important lifting equipment – the polar crane.

The internal containment shell of the reactor building is provided for by the project for the construction of new power units at Leningrad NPP. This is the Plant’s localizing security system. During the power unit operation, the ICS will exclude nuclear fallouts into the environment.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC. The Plant is located at the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the first plant in the country with RBMK-1000 reactors (thermal-neutron heat-pipe cooled uranium-graphite nuclear reactors). The NPP operates four power units with an electric capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first unit of replacement capacities with VVER-1200 reactor is at the physical start-up stage, the second VVER-1200 type unit is under construction. Rosenergoatom Concern JSC is the customer-developer of the project, ATOMPROEKT JSC is the general designer, and CONTSERN TITAN-2 JSC is the general contractor.
