Rostov NPP: physical tests with 75% capacity are carried out at the new unit No 4 under the pilot operation

At the new power unit No 4 of Rostov NPP (Volgodonsk, a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, a part of Rosatom’s Electric Power Division), the reactor unit undergoes physical tests as a part of the Experimental Industrial Pilot Operation (EIP) stage with the development of 75% of the normal capacity.

“The main goal of physical tests is to determine the efficiency of the control and safety systems’ core, to calculate the coefficients and effects of reactivity, and to confirm the compliance of the neutron-physical experimental values with calculation results”, the Deputy Chief Engineer for Operation of the Phase II of Rostov NPP Svyatoslav Chukavin noted.

During physical tests, the power, temperature, barometric, and density reactivity coefficients are measured at critical concentrations of boric acid inside the reactor, energy release distribution in the reactor core during the immersion of certain groups of control system elements is studied, and the in-core monitoring system is tested to check the function of protection signals generation by local reactor parameters.

It is to be recalled that the unit No 4 has been operating at 75% of its thermal capacity and 735 MW of electric capacity since 10 March.

The program of the EIP stage – according to the work schedule – provides for a gradual power increase in the unit to a normal level of 100%.

The commissioning of the power unit No.4 for commercial operation is scheduled for 2018.

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom Concern JSC (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
